His .ultimate ambition .is to be able t.o create a human being. He .tells Dr. Holst that if he .will only perform a c.ertain brain. operation on him, St.einmetz will become able. to attain his goal. He’.s got all the necessary .equipm.ent set up i.n his basement. Dr. H.ols.t, howeve.r, is too spook.ed by the whole th.ing. to agree to this .mad scheme, and re.fuses. Steinmet.z then sets about manipulat.ing Holst’s life, to pressu.re him into performin.g the operat.ion. By then Steinmet.z has become able to cre.ate a temporary human be.ing, and in the hope tha.t he c.an perhaps m.ake his own creation .per.form the .operation, he m.anifests a doppelg.ang.er of Dr. Holst. T.his double proceed.s to take over .Dr. Holst’s life, creating .chaos for him professionall.y and personally. And. then Dr. Ho.lst starts fighting b.ack.
